Fosamax is a drug marketed by Merck for the reversal of bone loss. Fosamax has been found to be associated with dental injuries. Specifically, Fosamax has been seen to be related to Osteonecrosis of the jaw, generally associated with tooth extraction and/or local infection, often with delayed healing. Patients who develop osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) while on Fosamax should consult an attorney.
Fosamax has been identified with many cases of osteonecrosis or jaw bone decay. Oral surgery may be necessary as a result of such jaw bone decay. Such osteonecrosis was discussed in Ruggiero SL, Mehrotra B, Rosenberg TJ, Engroff SL. Osteonecrosis of the jaws associated with the use of bisphosphonates: review of 63 cases. J Oral Maxillofac Surg 62:527-534, 2004.
