Guidant/Boston Scientific Pacemakers and
Defibrillators have been the subject of various product safety issues and
recalls. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided updates on
these pacemakers and implantable defibrillators made by Guidant, which is now a
Boston Scientific company.
Guidant/Boston Scientific Pacemakers and Defibrillators
must be monitored by physicians with follow-up exams of patients as a result of
these risks. Certain models of these pacemakers and implantable defibrillators
are being recalled and removed from hospital inventories because they have the
potential to malfunction due to failure of the capacitor, which controls how the
device holds its power supply.
Problems related to these pacemakers and implantable defibrillators may include intermittent or permanent loss of therapy, premature battery depletion or other malfunctions. Such defects may cause improper shocks or the failure to shock when necessary, which could result in the loss of consciousness, death, or the need to replace such devices.
