Wisconsin attorney for Ortho Evra blood clot injuries

OrthoEvra is a contraceptive patch marketed by a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, Ortho McNeil.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has specifically found that the Ortho Evra contraceptive patch exposes women to high levels of estrogen and as a result increases risk of injury.

Ortho Evra was the first skin patch approved for birth control. It is a weekly prescription patch that releases ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen hormone) and norelgestromin (a progestin hormone) through the skin into the blood stream.  The FDA advises women to talk to their doctor or healthcare provider about whether the patch is the right method of birth control for them.

OrthoEvra increases and thereby increases the risk of blood clots, which can cause very serious injuries. The new bolded warning specifically states that women who use Ortho Evra are exposed to about 60 percent more total estrogen in their blood than if they were taking a typical birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen. .

Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals is conducting additional studies to compare the risk of developing serious blood clots in women using Ortho Evra to the risk in women using typical birth control pills that contain 35 micrograms of estrogen. OrthoEvra should not be used by women who have a history of: heart attack or stroke blood clots in the legs, lungs (pulmonary embolism), or eyes blood clots in the deep veins of the legs chest pain known or suspected breast cancer or cancer of the lining of the uterus, cervix or vagina current unexplained vaginal bleeding yellowing of the whites of the eyes or of the skin (jaundice) during pregnancy or during previous use of hormonal contraceptives liver tumor (benign or cancerous) current or suspected pregnancy severe high blood pressure diabetes with complications of the kidneys, eyes, nerves, or blood vessels an allergy to Ortho Evra or to any of its ingredients.
